The Woods at Bridgend are one of the places we like to walk on a Sunday – they are owned by Islay Estates who keep them in very good condition. Click on the pictures for the full-sized original.

Woods in AutumnBridgend Woods 2

The woods go through many changes during the year. After a few dreadful weeks the weather was still, warm and sunny, not a chance to miss.

The first real event in the woods is happening now, the first snow drops. Germans call them Schneeglöckchen – snow bells and it is like that in the woods, they carpet the place and we know that spring is on its way. On a day like this (Sunday 9th February 2003) there are so many people walking here and all smile and pass a greeting as they pass. Some will stop and pass the time of day in the way of people for whom time is less important than curiosity.

These little harbingers of happiness cover the ground and line the path the rest of the year will follow with yellow daffodil and then bluebells, and after the bluebells – summer.

Along the path the river Sorn runs, stocked and maintained by Islay Estates as a fine fishing river. In the summer you will find fly fishers patiently working the river for trout. If you would like to fish this river the link is on my information page.

Over the next few months I will photograph and annotate the woods in their glory, and try to take you through their moods and also I will try to do the hardest thing – to show you their spirit.
