Craighouseis the population centre of the Island, it is
situated on the East coast in a sheltered bay formed with a number of
small islands giving shelter. The image above is a 180 degree sweep taken
across the bay from behind the Jura Store.

Dominating the village the distillery for Jura Malt
whisky has a visitor centre and shop. Tours are available by arrangement.
Opposite the distillery, the Jura Hotel is
a pleasant place to get snacks, meals or a pleasant drink. The owners
of the hotel allow camping in the field in front of the hotel and have
showers available for campers.
These pictures were taken in July 2003, I took my kids and three American
boys, visiting from Las Vegas, in for lunch and fed all eight of us for
under £40. I can recommend the venison burgers.
In the gardens in front of the house tropical plants grow, not because
the climate is tropical but because the gulf steam ensures that we rarely,
if ever, get frosts.
Walking along the road beside the shore there
are many nice little houses, as you can see the day was threatening rain
and we were eventually were forced by the deluge into the tiny church
by the children's playground.
This paid off because this little church has very attractive stained
glass windows, after dropping a few pounds in the box in thanks for shelter
we returned to the cars. I had of course left the sun roof open.
