Jura is a wild and largely unspoiled island.
It is to the west of Glasgow and north of Islay. J S Buie publishes the Jura research news letter, click on the link if you would like to make contact and Charles has an excellent site on George Orwell. The short ferry journey is from Port Askaig, the ferry leaving roughly every hour. On Jura you will find true wilderness, Jura House and gardens, the gardens are open to the public and Jura distillery. The photograph is from the Jura ferry looking towards the mountains the "Paps of Jura". With thanks to my two friends who live on Jura who helped with the writing of this. |
| Most of the pictures on this page
are by Andy Stewart, he has some excellent pictures of Islay and other places
on his web site. I am indebted to him for permission to use them. Most of these pictures are thumbnails of larger images that you can see by clicking on the image. These red deer are extremely common and curious on Jura and are often seen close to the road. Want self catering accommodation? Try Jura Cottages |

| Off the coast of Craighouse on Jura are several small islands collectively known as the Small Isles. The primary School there derives its name from them. They provide a very calm and safe harbour at Craighouse. |

If we are lucky on Islay and Jura we get some spectacular sunsets. As the sun settles towards the horizon the land turns inky black, beaches shine like burnished silver and the sea sparkles like a diamond tiara. Andy has caught that moment here looking across the Sound of Islay towards the mountainous south coast of Islay. |
| On the road from the ferry to Craighouse, Jura House and Gardens is a local attraction you must not miss. There are several lovely walks through the grounds, a gorgeous beach for picnicking and a wonderful walled garden. The flowers right and below grow in this sheltered and fertile place. Recently they have opened a refreshment tent with home made cakes. It is situated through the walled garden next to the meadow garden. |

| Just outside the gardens there is a small nursery where you can purchase many of the plants growing in the garden. There is a small fee for entering the grounds and a brochure, available at the gate gives details of the history, flora, fauna and geology of the house and grounds. It also gives details of the walks in the grounds. |
